Councilman Paul Colavecchio (D-At-large) submitted his resignation from Cuyahoga Falls City Council on Wednesday evening, February 6th, effective February 15th. He was not expected to campaign to keep the seat in this year’s election, as he had not filed petitions to run.
Colavecchio took over the at-large seat in 2015 when then Councilwoman Carrie Hummel Snyder resigned to accept employment with the city. He was appointed by the Summit County Democratic Party’s Central Committee, and the Ward 5 seat he held prior was filled by Mike Brillhart, who was also selected by the Central Committee.
Colavecchio’s wife, Diana Colavecchio, resigned the Ward 5 seat on council in 2012 when she was appointed to become clerk of Stow Municipal Court, after which her husband was selected to fill the seat in the Falls. He kept the seat in the 2013 election and held it until he was appointed to the at-large seat he is now resigning in 2015.
Speaking on the resignation, Mayor Don Walters said “Paul Colavecchio’s dedication to serving the city was unparalleled. He will be dearly missed, and I wish him well in his future endeavors.”
As the Falls Free Press previously reported, Colavecchio’s at-large seat is sought by Councilman Russ Iona (R-8), who is leaving his current seat to run, while Tim Gorbach (D-At-large) is also running for the seat. If Gorbach wins, the Democratic Party’s Central Committee will appoint someone to fill his current at-large seat.
Colavecchio’s letter did not give any reason for his resignation, and he had not responded to the Falls Free Press by the time this article was published.
