Residing along the banks of the Cuyahoga River, there is little doubt why aquatic activities have become popular with Cuyahoga Falls residents over the past decade. In particular, kayaking has grown locally at an immense rate, promoting the river and city to sportsmen around the Midwest and beyond. To further this promotion and provide much-needed seating in the downtown area, Mayor Don Walters has created a plan to incorporate kayaks donated to the city into his proposed “Paddle Park.”
After 16 factory-returned kayaks were donated to the city by Jackson Kayak of Sparta, Tennessee, a new selfie spot was set up next to the downtown pavilion as away to promote the kayaking sport in Cuyahoga Falls.“The water recreation has exploded. Between kayaking and tubing, the river is now enjoyed by thousands each summer,” Walters told the Falls Free Press. “It brings visitors to our city to stimulate the local economy.”
Upon further review of the downtown area, Walters decided the remaining kayaks could be implemented into a plan beyond their intended use. Multiple kayaks will be converted into benches by building up the inside of each and leveling the opening to make them flat on top. Mounting to the proper height, the entire top of each kayak will serve as a bench alongside additional tables to provide a new seating area in the vacant lot next to Metropolis Popcorn. A small stage will also be built for occasional music performances on this end of the street.
“We needed more seating in that area and the kayak theme promotes that the Cuyahoga River was named the number one urban kayak spot in the country,” Walters explained.
If city council approves the expenditure for this project this fall, it can begin immediately and Paddle Park will be open to the public in Spring 2022.
