City Council Minutes Report: October 16, 2023

City Council News & Politics

Cuyahoga Falls City Council holds regular meetings on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Council committee meetings are held on the first and third Mondays in order to allow councilmembers to publicly discuss pending legislation that will be voted on at regular meetings. The public is free to comment on pending legislation during the allowed time set aside as part of committee meetings.

City council standing committees met and the following legislation was discussed:

Planning & Zoning:

B-112: An ordinance accepting the planning commission’s recommendation for the approval of a conditional zoning certificate and major site plan for the construction of a 12,300 sq. ft. auto body and repair building for Caliber Collision. Planning Director Rod Kurtz informed the committee that this file passed the planning commission with some minor conditions for screening and stormwater. The project calls for the demolition of the former Burger King near Steels Corners Rd. and in its place build a 12.300 square foot structure with new paving, fencing, and landscaping. A representee from Caliber Collision was also present and gave an overview of the company; they are the largest body repair company in the country with over 1500 locations while this site would employ 15 employees and feature state-of-the-art repair equipment and paint booth. If the project is voted forward, construction would begin next March and be completed by Fall 2024. The committee voted to bring this out for a vote before all of council next Monday.

Finance & Appropriations:

B-113: An ordinance authorizing the mayor to enter into a contract or contracts for the purchase of a portion of certain real property known as 1749 Main Street. Assistant Electric Superintendent Rod Troxell stated this would allow the electric department to purchase property next to substation 1 for the construction of a new substation as part of the 69kv upgrade project to the city’s electric system. The committee voted to bring this out for a vote before all of council next Monday.

B-114: An ordinance authorizing the director of public Service to enter into a contract or contracts, without competitive bidding, with A. Crano Excavating for the installation of a new 18” storm sewer and associated appurtenances on Front Street, from The Glens subdivision to Sackett Avenue. Water department superintendent Russ Kring explained this will allow the city to begin the storm sewer project on South Front St. The cost would be $140k and paid for out of the storm drainage fund. The project would begin next month and take approximately a month to complete. The committee voted to bring this out for a vote before all of council next Monday.
