Miscellaneous Business:
Mayor Walters gave an overview of how this weekend’s weather emergency was handled by the various departments within the city. This included calls responded to by the fire department for broken sprinkler system pipes that had to be answered and buildings affected had to be placed on fire watch until the repairs could be made to their fire suppression systems. The mayor went on to describe the full commitment that came from the street department which utilized a special low-temperature green salt that is more effective in subzero weather. The electric services personnel had many members working over 24 hours with just a two-hour break in order to restore power in the area encompassing Ward 8. The team faced many obstacles, including the high winds while trying to maneuver a bucket truck to make needed repairs. The crew also found that diagnostics did not work normally in the frigid temperatures, nor did some of the normal repair procedures. As this was unfolding other members of the service department staff were in the process of opening the city building and Natatorium as warming centers once the power was finally restored.
