This is a sampling of Cuyahoga Falls police reports made available January 28 and is not meant to be a comprehensive list of all events occurring in the city. All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty.

1-20  A Kensington Court resident reports unknown suspects entered her unlocked vehicle, which was parked in the driveway of her residence. Suspects stole multiple credit/gift cards from her wallet. Her Huntington Bank card was used at local stores ($641.84). She has since canceled all of her stolen cards. There are leads and she wishes to prosecute.

1-20  An 80-year-old Cuyahoga Falls woman reports an unknown person(s) called her and pretended to be from the company Apple and advised her that her Apple account had been compromised. The unknown person instructed the victim to go to the bank and withdraw $9,500 and send it through a Bitcoin kiosk to restore her account and they would refund the money. The victim sent the money and realized afterwards it was a scam. Photos of the transactions and Bitcoin wallet addresses were tagged into property.

1-22  While investigating a traffic stop on Main Street near Howe Avenue for several equipment violations, a probable cause search led police to find a driver to be in possession of 0.9 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The driver was arrested and transported to CFPD, where they were booked and charged with possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension, and failure to use turn signals. The suspect was released on a personal recognizance bond. The substance will be sent to BCI for testing.

1-22  A 40-year-old Akron man was stopped on Route 8 for several traffic violations. Officers observed the driver had blood shot eyes, an odor of alcohol emanating from his person, and was in possession of an open container of alcohol in his center console. The driver voluntarily performed sobriety tests and was arrested. The driver later submitted two breath samples being .079 and .078 BAC. The driver was charged with OVI, possession of an open container, display of lighted lights, and expired registration. The driver was later released with a sober individual. 

1-22  CFPD initiated a traffic stop on a Ford Fiesta due to the driver having a suspended license while on Route 8. Officers made contact with the driver who confirmed he did not have a license. Officers conducted a consent search of the driver’s jacket pocket and located a broken glass pipe with burnt residue. The driver also told officers, under Miranda, there were burnt chore boys in the vehicle, which are commonly used alongside drug paraphernalia. The driver was given a summons for the paraphernalia and the vehicle was towed.

1-23  An 85-year-old Akron man reported to police that an unknown male represented himself as a rental property manager and accepted a down payment and first month’s rent for a property from the victim without providing him the rental. The victim reports that he is at a loss of $1,600 in the form of two $800 CVS gift cards. The victim stated that he is willing to prosecute for the offense.

1-23  Officers conducted a traffic stop at 2nd Street and Broad Blvd. Upon making contact with the driver, officers observed bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. The driver voluntarily performed the standardized field sobriety tests and was arrested for OVI. She subsequently provided a breath sample of 0.178 BAC. She was booked and released on a PR bond. A 39-year-old Cuyahoga Falls man was identified as the front passenger in the vehicle. He was found to be in possession of an open container on his person. He was charged with open container and released on scene with a summons.

1-25  Police responded to the 1000 block of  Broadway East in regard to a menacing situation. The resident called into dispatch complaining about the Cuyahoga Falls Street Department blocking his driveway while they were plowing the streets. According to dispatch, the suspect made threats on a recorded line to beat up plow truck drivers if they did it again. Police spoke with the suspect who stated that they were frustrated by the weather and thought the city plow truck drivers had blocked him in when in fact it was a private plow company.  It is unknown whether the city wishes to prosecute for menacing. The suspect apologized for his behavior and was warned for menacing. Cleared without further incident.

1-25  It was reported to police that a Hyundai Elantra owned by a 44-year-old Akron man was parked on the roadway in the 100 block of Madison Avenue. During the overnight hours of January 24 into January 25, an unknown suspect shattered the rear driver’s side window of the vehicle, causing about $300 in damage, and unlawfully entered the vehicle. Once inside, the suspect attempted to steal the vehicle by damaging the steering column using a DeWalt screwdriver, resulting in an estimated $1,200 in damage, in an attempt to steal the car. The suspect was unsuccessful and fled the scene prior to police arrival, leaving the screwdriver inside the vehicle. The vehicle owner does wish to press charges.

1-27  A supervisor at an Affordable Senior Healthcare & Housing Property on Cathedral Lane stated to CFPD 56 narcotic medications were reported missing. An investigation was done by the facility, and an employee was found to have violated multiple company policies. That employee was terminated and is a suspect in the missing narcotics. At this time management states they do not wish to prosecute and have turned the matter over to the Nursing Board, but they needed to make a police report due to the missing medication.

1-28 During the street parking ban due to snow between January 24 and January 28, the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department issued 24 parking tickets.
