Cuyahoga Falls City council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month and council committee meetings are held on the first and third Monday to publicly discuss pending legislation that will be voted on by council as a whole during its regular scheduled meetings. The public is free to comment on pending legislation during the allowed time on the night of committee meetings.
On Monday, October 18 city council standing committees met at the Natatorium to discuss items before the planning and zoning committee and the public affairs committee.
In the planning and zoning committee, ordinance B-88 was discussed. This legislation, if passed, will allow United Car Wash to have a conditional use zoning certificate to construct a new car wash on Second St. at the site of the former Supersonic car wash. Committee Chair Susan Spinner let Planning Director Rob Kurtz have the floor and gave the committee details and conditions that were recommended by the planning commission, including landscaping (there is currently none) and proper lighting and signage. Ron Carlton, the owner of United Car Wash, was also present for questions. Council-at-Large Jeff Iula asked if Mr. Carlton was concerned about another car wash that was being planned at the site of the former McCready’s Tire, which is less than two blocks away, but Mr. Carlton replied, “competition is good.”
The committee voted to bring this out before council for a vote at the Monday October 25 meeting.
Next up was the public affairs committee with two pieces of legislation.
B-89: This ordinance would amend the city’s traffic control file on recommendation of the traffic committee. City Engineer Toni Demasi made the presentation of the three items recommended. Item one was a request to prohibit parking on the east side of Suncrest Dr. between house numbers 2151-2165. This was brought before the traffic committee by Councilman Jerry James, showing there was site distance problem and other factors including sanitation trucks and snowplows being able to make it past parked cars. The second item was a request to the traffic committee by Councilwoman Meika Penta to prohibit parking on the south side of Valley Rd. at 27th St. for 40 ft. east of the intersection, the conditions of the intersection including the tight turn and site distance.
The third item was to amend the traffic control file for the intersection of 17th and Grant that currently states that the intersection is a four-way stop. It is actually a two-way stop, and has been for quite some time. This change will amend the file to reflect the actuality of the intersection.
The committee agreed to bring all of these matters out to be voted on by council next Monday.
B-90: This legislation authorizes the director of public service to be a member of the board of trustees of American Municipal Power Inc. Service Director Anthony Zumbo explained that this was just a housekeeping matter. Rather than putting a person’s name in the legislation, this change would put just the position within the city of the board member who will be serving.
The committee agreed to bring this resolution out to be voted on by council next Monday as well.
